Updated: No clean up Saturday.

Well I missed my goal of having the May 24th clean up. The challenge I'm having is coordination. As you know this blog is dedicated to the independent spirit of community participation. However, the clean ups require coordination with the city department of public works. They are the ones who come out and pick up our trash at the end of the day. They need advance notice and if it rains then I like to postpone to Sunday, however they don't pick up on Sundays.

So I'm looking for some ideas on how to keep the clean ups going without their participation. I'm interested in more spontaneous cleanups around Shaw instead of the more planned ones.

With that said, I'm definitely thinking this Saturday is a perfect day to do another Shaw clean up. Meet up at Azi's at 10 AM and we'll figure it out from there. Who's interested?

I've been completely slacking around the world of Treebox Vodka. The man has been keeping me busy and unfortunately I haven't been tending to this world. There is still plenty of trash out there on the DC streets.

I've been thinking about the monthly cleanups lately - the last one was in March as April was a down month. I feel like the cleanups are a great community activity and provide that immediate positive feeling that we are doing something good. But overall the value is very slim I think in terms of overall impact. Just my current thoughts on the topic...

Anyway, the cleanups should still go on. I'm going to schedule the next one for May 24th. No ideas on a location yet.

The next TreeboxVodka monthly clean up project is Sunday, March 9th. We are looking to have 30 volunteers out there - help us make our goal. The more people means the more litter we can can clean up and we can clean out the dirty treeboxes. Our target area is 7th street. Starting at Rhode Island Ave/7th and working our way down and hitting the connecting streets as well.

Details
Date: Sunday, March 9th
Time: 10:30 AM
Where: 7th & Rhode Island Ave. NW
What: We'll be starting at 7th and RI and working our way down 7th street picking up Velicoff and Steel Reserve.
Bring: Gloves, friends, any additional tools you want to use for cleaning.
I'll Supply: Trash bags, I'll have a few extra gloves, and some trash picking tongs.

What else do you need?
Truly, I don't know. Hanging out on Sunday picking up beer cans and fast food wrappers seems like reward enough. But for those inclined to incentives, then we have you covered. Come out and join us three Saturday's and you'll receive a Shaw goodie. Past 3-time litter-pickers walked away with an I (heart) t-shirt. They were very happy.

The next one is Saturday, March 8th. I'm thinking about tackling 7th Street. It's a high profile street in the neighborhood and could use some work. In addition, I have a lofty goal for March. The goal is to have at least 30 people join us. So far, we've had about 15-18 every time, but I think we can double that number. So, get your friends out there and others in the neighborhood. In addition, with more people we can do more things like more trash picking and cleaning of the treeboxes. A good spring cleaning with rakes and brooms for 7th street!

So, I've obviously quit posting on the blog for sometime now.

However, behind the scenes the past week or so I've been brainstorming about 2008 and the Shaw Monthly Clean Up. Operationally I've put together my plan and the schedule: the second Saturday of every month we'll meet up and do our thing. Litter pickup, planting, etc... I've also crafted a press release to get out to the media to see if I can generate a bit of buzz.

Anyway, I still see the Monthly Clean Up as a great way to get out there and do something positive for the community. However, I did spent the last hour doing my weekly reading of the OffSeventh blog and got the recap on all the heated gang crap in Shaw and this has definitely set my attitude back. This is from OffSeventh:

    * 31 shots behind Shiloh Baptist - Monday evening
    * 2 shot behind 7th and N St property - Wednesday evening
    * Report of a "drive by shooting" at 1st and N Sts, NW
    * Report of 5-6 shots in the vicinity of 7th and P Streets at 1:30pm this afternoon

I'm planning on kicking off the next clean up at 5th & Rhode Island Ave. But right now, I'm asking myself "Why?" I do like to believe that the Broken Windows Theory has some validity, but that can only go so far. When some people in the area think of life as disposable, why am I taking time out of my life to pick up trash. ... Anyway, just ranting ... as of now the clean up continues - 5th & Rhode Island on February 9th.
