The launch of the inaugural Shaw Monthly Clean Up was a major success on Saturday. We had a 15 person turn-out and a few kids along the way to support the effort. I'm very proud to have neighbors who came out and made the time commitment to help clean the neighborhood. Thanks to everyone!
Overall, I think this was a great kick-off for this monthly event. We were able to tackle all of the large trash along 7th street and do a bit of detail work along the way as well. Countless cigarette butts were picked up . Plus, it was great to see a mix of neighbors I know along with a bunch of new faces. This was a nice way to meet some new people in the community.
Special thanks to James Carter for helping organize all of this with me and Kari for a bunch of day time logistics. Martin for some photography. And DPW for picking up our bulk trash. And of course everyone who came out!
So what's next? Saturday, September 8th we hit the streets again. Where should we go? What should we clean? Let us know in the comments.
Here are some current ideas:
- Skate park clean up over at 11th & Rhode Island
- Focus in on a letter street maybe.
Also, for any people who made it out on Saturday, please post in the comments any advice or thoughts on how to improve the clean up
See some photos below.

How about around Dunbar High School and the NY Avenue Playground? It gets a lot of traffic and there's a lot of trash to be picked up. It would also make the new area look better to go along with all the new development being done at the Dunbar HS field.

Thanks for helping to organize Sat.'s cleanup. We had fun helping out and meeting folks.
I need to get myself one of those Orangutongs - they're great!
Looking forward to next month's cleanup.

My wife and I moved to Warner Street about 2 months ago and love the neighborhood. We feel safe and like our neighbors.
My only gripe is the alley that runs behind my house between R Street and Warner St.
In the time we have been living here some one has deficated twice (unless there's a horse running wild in Shaw, the volume tells me it was a person and not a squirrel, cat or dog). There have been used condoms on the ground and I came home one afternoon to a person sitting against my fence drinking. I thought a motion sensor light would help, but somebody threw a rock at it.
Part of the reason our alleys are havens for this activity is that they are not kept up. They are overgrown with weeds, have tons of garbage and are poorly lit. Sounds like the perfect place to get drunk, use a bathroom and have sex with a hooker.

Sounds like your alley/street could definitely be in the TreeboxVodka Hall of Shame.
One thing you can do is contact the city to pick up bulk trash and do other services.
Use the service online here: http://src.dc.gov.
And we are planning a cleanup in that area. The 5th street/NJ ave area. We are thinking the October cleanup for this.
