The Shaw clean up was this past Saturday (4/21). Unfortunately it wasn’t really the massive clean up I had in mind. Let me begin by thanking Shaw Main Streets for organizing this event and for all the people and businesses that participated. Azi’s donated coffee and treats and La Carbonara pitched in some excellent pizza. Also, Alix Padrao, director of SMS organized the cleaning tools, mulch, trash pick-up, etc… And the Shaw Green Team came out to work too.
Despite all of that the event was quite underwhelming. The turnout was really low. I estimated around 10-15 volunteers outside of the organizers. I guess my expectations were higher. The event was scheduled to start at 9AM but didn’t get underway till about 10 and we only worked till 1PM. And, I didn’t see any kids or young people from the local schools. This was a great activity for teaching about Earth Day and get people involved in the community.
Also, since this is a volunteer event it should be organized to get the most out of the participants who are pitching in their time. I recommend extending it into the evening around 5-6PM and doing it twice a year.

huh--interesting update!
Sadly I couldn't make it due to a project that kept me tethered to the house, but I cleaned up and down my block on Saturday.
Wonder why turn out was low? I think the Saturday morning time would've been convenient for most. Maybe getting other groups involved and committed to it would've prompted better turn out?

The weather must of been too nice. People have been stuck inside all winter are were probably ready to do some of their own yard work.
I think the group Hands On D.C. is going to be at Shaw Junior High this weekend to do a fix up though - I'll post if I learn more about any volunteer opps.
